I started the New Year feeling a little guilty for eating and drinking a bit too much over the festive season. Whilst a dry January and a new fangled diet were out of the question, if I am being brutally honest a number of outfits in the wardrobe  were fitting, to put it mildly, a bit snug. So the pressure was on to make that New Year’s resolution and commit to a new goal to improve my wellbeing in the coming year.

My plan was to loose a few pounds and get in shape for spring. Joining a gym seemed the most obvious thing to do. Everywhere I looked there where promotional offers to join one. The reality of getting up early a couple of mornings a week; or leaving work to pound the treadmill at my local gym was suddenly daunting. It was not exciting, would be difficult to sustain, and was not something I really wanted to do.

Why was it important to make a New Years resolution I asked myself?  

1. Self-commitment 
Making a commitment to care for myself required contemplation, honesty and being proactive. 

2. Self-reflection 
Through self evaluation I was able to find out my flaws and find ways to improve myself, something that is necessary for development.

I knew I wanted to get fitter and healthier but I was not sure whether the gym was for me. After further reflection I realised that my decision to choose the Gym as my preferred choice to get fit, was heavily influenced by the mass external advertising I had been consuming.

After a bit of soul searching and a lot of research I realised that I get the most rewards when I am learning something new. So, I signed up to a Tai Chi class. You are probably wondering why Tai Chi? Well, it is an exercise were you need to use breathing, visualisation and movement to work the entire body all at once. It was originally a Chinese Martial Arts but it is mainly practiced today as an excellent form of exercise with many health benefits. Although there is a lot to learn it works for me and I am enjoying the challenge.

It is also the Chinese New Year 2018, the year of the Dog. People are said to hold similar personality traits to the animal named after the year they were born. I was born in  the year of the dog, an animal which symbolises luck. So what better way to start the New Year.​

My tireless pursuit to create unique one-of-a-kind silver jewellery for people who want to stand out from the crowd is reflected in self-fulfilment, harmony and balance, the skills needed to master Tai Chi. It might take me a lifetime but I will get there.

For a lot of us the first festive event will be the office Christmas lunch followed by a night out partying. If your Christmas celebration starts from noon onwards this could be a challenge in itself as you want to make an impact but you don’t want to drag a trolly bag behind you with your entire wardrobe.

Glitter is the trend
You think that it might be a good idea to find out from a few close colleague and friends what they might be wearing.

​Despite the recent environmental concerns about glitter all the talk is about glittery dresses, sequins, more glitter, rich textures, twinkling jewellery and even more glitter. All of a sudden the little black number doesn’t look that appealing. And then there are the finishing touches.
Here are my 6 tips to help you stand out from the crowd over the party season: ​
1. Flatter your shape - Buy an outfit that fits you well. Not too tight, not too loose and choose a colour that you will love.

The most important thing is too feel confident in what you are wearing.

2. Festive colours - This time of year offers some striking autumnal colours. Deep reds and greens are a festive alternative that you can accessorise. A shade of deep merlot still feels festive without straying too far from your go-to little black number. 
  • Why not try metallics, a sizzling red sequin look, or a velvet outfit. All are great on the party circuit. 
  • As an alternative, mixing different textures or patterns can help you define your own personal look.
  • While you can never go wrong with a classic little black dress, give the staple wardrobe item a refresh with some feather or sheer detailing.

3.  Make up - Whilst your make up looks good for the office it may not be dramatic enough for throwing some shapes on the dance floor. Add an unexpected twist to the look with a shade of deep blue or green lipstick. The basics should include mascara, concealer, blusher and lip gloss.

4. Jewellery - That go to necklace you have, has suffered from being tarnished by perfume and looks tired. Buy quality items you will love and go for one amazing statement piece which will make a far greater impact. It will lift you and dare we say it add your own personality to everything you wear

5. Hair - For those finishing touches it goes without saying that a great haircut is a must. But if like me you haven’t the time to visit your hairdresser then 10 minutes with the curling tongs will do amazing things to your hair.

6. The shoes -  If like me you don’t have the perfect cross between the ideal party shoe and the ultimate basic shoe you will need at least 2 pairs of shoes to choose from. One for comfort during the day and a killer pair for partying through the night.

In this modern hectic lifestyle it is becoming ever more difficult to stand out from the ordinary and develop your own style on a budget. The fantastic price paid earlier this week for a reported Leonardo da Vinci artwork (a record $450m) and an Angolan Diamond $33.7m had me choking on my cornflakes.

'Always buy the best  quality that you can afford at the time.'
For most of us these days the shrinking pound has made it even more important to buy wisely. I come from a hard working family. We didn’t have lots of money to buy stuff, everything we had seemed to come from the market; was inexpensive; and had a tendency not to last very long. The irony was we had no money and yet we were forever buying.

I remember buying my first piece of jewellery. I had been invited to a rather swanky Christmas do and wanted to look my best. I bought what I considered was a lovely bracelet, hammered texture with a black oxidised surface. I bought it because it looked good, was unique, none of my friends had anything like it, and more importantly it was something I could afford. 

​I thought I looked a million dollars and felt very confident. An older woman who was stunningly dressed asked me about the bracelet. I remember feeling a swell of pride and elation that of all the women at the party she had noticed me. ‘I like your bracelet, is it silver?’ I said, ‘no’ to which she replied ‘oh, you should really buy something of quality’ and with that she was gone.

Little did she know the impact those few words had on me. I was mortified, crushed and left the party shortly after that. I later found out my ‘lovely bracelet’ was made from a metal alloy with a plastic coating. Needless to say I never wore the bracelet again. 

Without realising it I had got my first and most important lesson in buying something of quality, which is to always buy the best value and quality item that you can afford at the time. Even now I look for things that I really love, are of good quality and that I can pass on. My Pinterest Board is full of items I would like to have but not necessarily need or afford.
​
So regardless of the cost of the next Renaissance Painting or rare diamond find, it’s the quality that will stand the test of time.
